For most of us, when we hear the word epidemic, we immediately think of viral or bacterial epidemics such as Influenza, HIV/AIDS, Ebola, and the plague epidemics that have decimated millions of the world population. We overlook the slowly progressing epidemics that kill millions yearly, such as the obesity and its comorbidities epidemic. Since obesity is insidious and slowly progressing, many do not realize the destructive effects. Prior to 1980, obesity was a rare phenomenon in the U.S. and the rest of the world. In early 1980s, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), through its EIS (Epidemic Intelligence Service) and constant surveillance of the U.S. territory, discovered that individuals in several states were gaining weight abnormally. The CDC covertly started to investigate by creating the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) interviews in 1984. In 1985, The CDC published the first obesity map based on these interviews and the map showed eight states (Georgia, South Carolina, Kentucky, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, and North Dakota) with obesity rates of 10- 14 percent. Fourteen other states (Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Illinois, Minnesota, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, and California ) had obesity rates of less than 10 percent and the rest of the states had no reportable obesity data. Since that seminal obesity map, the CDC has continued to publish the obesity maps yearly and the 2018 highest obesity rate is over 36 percent. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity has also become epidemic worldwide in a very short period of time. By the WHO accounts, if the common trend continues, there will be more than 2.7 billion people overweight by 2025.
